Internship Program

At Janell Wysock Textiles we value hands-on learning and sharing of skills. In order to keep skills, techniques, and processes alive, we must share them and pass them along to the next generation. We consider ourselves guardians of our craft and are proud and excited to share our process to spark further exploration and development within the field. We offer internships as a way to embark on a journey of creativity. It has proven helpful for those persons curious about what it’s like to work and to experience having a studio practice.

Intern Testimonials

"Interning with Janell was an incredible experience! I was constantly inspired and learning new things, from both a professional and creative perspective. As a social media intern, I learned a lot about creating and developing a professional online presence across multiple platforms and was even able to gain some experience working with textiles. Janell also shared lots of eye opening information and practices in regards to sustainability, which I really appreciated. I would highly recommend working with Janell if you have the opportunity!"

"Working with Janell has been an experience of immeasurable growth. Janell truly sees the value of trial and error with learning and incorporates that into her teaching style for the entire internship. Being incredibly hands-on in the studio makes for more than just learning skills and crafts of whatever technique you’re doing, but also skills of how to conduct yourself and handle any project you’re working on, no matter the curve balls. Working with Janell has been an invaluable experience as putting in the time and work has translated to me learning how to knit, weave, handle myself in a studio environment and to conduct myself as part of a team working towards large scale projects."

"Interning with Janell was an amazing hands-on experience. Everyday I learned something new, whether it be about the Philadelphia community, textiles, sewing, hand making goods or running a business. Janell creates a wonderful internship experience by caring for her interns. She makes sure that the interns are continually learning and experiencing all of the aspects of her business hands on. She asks what you want to learn and teaches you beyond that to help you become the best you can be at it. Janell has beautiful machines to create textiles including huge floor looms, frame looms, inkle looms, triangle looms, knitting machines and more. She is also very connected to Philadelphia designers and to her community. She knows a lot about Philadelphia fashion and is always striving to do what is best as a designer in this community. Everything she creates is created with a very mindful approach, considering sustainability, ethics and valuing the time an artist puts into their work. Janell has a huge skill set and will take the time to share all of her knowledge with you in a way you could never learn from anyone else."

"Halfway through the summer of 2021, Janell accepted me as one of her interns. She already had a team and flow, but took me on to help me complete my studies. Working alongside Janell is one of the best decisions a creative student can make. She is a hands-on, visually engaging teacher who is both empathetic and strong, fostering an environment where creativity and productivity are intertwined. I am so lucky to have spent the short time I have with her, as moments in the studio are extremely valuable and niche to textile creation and craft. Her talent and kindness is passed to each and every person who learns from her, and her connection to the process is awe inspiring. For those curious about the forces that create the fibers of our lives, this studio is your place to be."

"Deciding to do my internship with Janell was hands down the best decision I made in college. As a graphic design intern, I was in charge of web design, fashion photography and product management, creating graphics for social media, advertising, and organizing partnerships with influencers. Not only did I get real world experience in these areas, but also so much more. Even with no experience in fashion, I was immersed in the world of textiles and learned so much more through hands-on learning than I ever imagined. I even learned weaving, crotchet, and even how to process flax into linen! Where else in the world would I get that opportunity than with Janell Wysock Textiles? Every single day was a new adventure and I had my eyes opened to issues of sustainability, and the environment. My time with Janell has created real positive change within me, and I am so grateful to her for this amazing experience."

“Interning with Janell was one of the best experiences I had at school. I wish I could just intern with her forever. I was working
on a project with t-shirt yarn when I applied as an intern and we talked a lot about sustainability and up-cycling materials (check out her scrap yarn work, it’s awesome!) I couldn’t fit a weaving class into my school schedule that semester but Janell taught me how to weave and I got to be part of the project that she did with the Koresh Dance Company (it was a really cool thing to see). I learned so much from Janell in the semesters that I worked with her. The schedule is really flexible and easy to manage and her studio is incredible.”

“Working with Janell was a pleasure.
Her beautiful studio and bright energy
makes for an enjoyable and comfortable workplace. During my time here I learned
so many things that I was able to use in
my professional and personal work, both technically and creatively. The fact that
not a single scrap of fiber goes to waste
in her studio is admirable, and the products that come from this practice are beautiful.
I would definitely recommend this
experience to anyone looking to broaden their knowledge of textile creativity!”

“During the summer of 2019 I had the privilege of interning with Janell Wysock where I was able to focus on improving my skills as a machine knitter and overall textile designer. Janell focuses on kindness and support to the individualistic needs of her interns within the studio for a mutually beneficial experience to all. Not only was I given much creative freedom during my time with Janell but I learned countless sustainable approaches to design. If you are passionate about textiles and limiting your waste in the fashion industry I would suggest that Janell Wysock Textiles would be an enchanting internship experience for you!”
